Avinyó 2019 'Petillant', Penedés, Spain
Petillant is a vi d’agulla, the Catalan name for prickly wine. This vibrant and refreshing wine is the traditional summertime quaffer of the Penedès region of Catalonia, and it’s perfect for drinking out of a porrón.
Winemaker: The Esteve-Nadal siblings Xavier, Luis, Pedro Juan, and Mercé.
Farming: Practicing Organic
Varieties: 70% Muscat, 20% Macabeo, and 10% Xarel-lo
Terroir: Mix of young- to old-vines (5-50 years) on Clay calcareous soils in the cool climate and high altitude region Alt Penedès (400m elevation)
Vinification: Fermented in stainless steel. The carbonation is created by the charmat method of secondary fermentation in tank.
Avinyó farms only estate-owned vineyards, a rarity among cava producers.
Today, another generation is at the helm. Four siblings blend tradition, technology, and a relentless pursuit of quality to make their distinctive cavas.
