Kunstler 'Hochheimer Domdechaney' Riesling Trocken Erste Lage, Rheingau 2018

Farming: Organic Practices

Winemaker: Gunter Künstler

Varieties: Riesling

Vineyards/History: Weingut Künstler has a history dating back to 1648. Gunter Künstler hails from the famous village of Hochheim am Main; in 17th century Britain the term ‘Hock’ was used to describe all Rhinegau wines. His family founded a winery in what is now the Czech Republic in the seventeenth century but were expelled from the country, as German speakers, after the Second World War and had to rebuild from scratch in Hochheim. The Rheingau winery was founded by Gunter’s father Franz in 1965. Gunter took over in 1992 and two years later they were admitted to the VDP group of top producers.

Hochheim am Main is on the banks of the Main river, which flows west from Frankfurt, meeting the Rhein at Mainz, on the other side of the river from Hochheim. Essentially the vineyards in this village are at the cross of these two rivers, which certainly influences the wines produced here, providing an elevated amount of humidity in the air. The wines are very pure, clean and precise, detailed and meticulous, but also delicious and satisfying.

Vinification: Barely 12% alc, it leads with fruit and then the tenderest reminder of mineral and then a jot of white hyacinth, all in a heart-renderingly cool creamy texture. Domdechaney is considered one of the best vineyard sites in the village. This wine is a dry, elegant powerhouse, awarded 94 points by James Suckling.
