ORGANIC FARMING
WOMAN-MADE and NATURAL WINE
EMILIA-ROMAGNA
ITALY

In 1998, Elisa Mazzavillani and her mother, Marta Valpiani took over 12 HA of vineyards in Romagna, overhauling the land by hand to restore it to a more natural state of agriculture. Although they are not certified, Elisa focuses on sustainable practices in the winery (lower water and electricity usage; lighter glass bottles for a lower carbon footprint), and is integrating more biodynamic approaches into the vineyards with each vintage. An accomplished artist, Elisa creates the  labels herself, meant to reflect the beautiful flora and fauna found in their vineyards.

Winemaker: Elisa Mazzavillani

Farming: Biodynamic

Variety: Albana

Terroir / Soil: Coming from two vineyards at Terra del Sole and two at Castrocaro Terme; 110-300 meters above sea level. Soils are composed of clay (medium texture) with fossil-rich limestone, pebbly white sands and sandstone. The vines are 30-60 years old.

Vinification: Hand-harvested.  Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and without malolactic fermentation. The wine then sees four weeks skin contact and maceration, with frequent punchdowns to extract body and texture.

Aging: This Albana spends 6 months in cement, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered before seeing another 6 months of aging in bottle.

Tasting notes:  A rarely exported Albana Secco, this natural, skin-contact wine is floral, juicy and even a little salty!  Overtones of honeysuckle, bruised white peaches and wild herbs like fennel and tarragon mingle with hints of salty parmesan rind. Four weeks of contact on the skins gives incredible depth and body, making this wine dynamic for food pairings ranging from bottarga to artichokes to pork.
