MT VEEDER, NAPA VALLEY, and CALIFORNIA

At the crest of Mount Veeder, a sinuous appellation that clings to the  Mayacamas Mountains’ southern reaches, rests Mayacamas Vineyards – as it has for over a century. Here, at 2,400 feet, above the din of Napa’s valley floor, fifty acres of vines quietly speak to both an unshakeable past and fortitude for the future. Their fruit finds its voice in a  stone cellar built-in 1889, and, when bottled, it shares with us a story of humility and commitment – unadorned, with concentration, elegance, and balance.

Mayacamas Merlot remains one of the purest expressions of the varietal produced in America today—always made with restraint to express the more serious side of the grape.

Farming: Sustainable with organic methods

Winemaker: Andy Erickson

Varieties: Merlot

Terroir: Mount Veeder is a one-of-a-kind appellation with a cooler mountain climate and some of the lowest yields in Napa Valley. Soils range from poor volcanic deposits to ancient seabeds; the grapes produced here retain high acidity and a clean, mineral character. Average vine age of 30 years, located at approximately 2000 feet in elevation.

Vinification: Neutral Wood and Cement

Aging: 22 Months in neutral oak (primarily large-format foudres)

Tasting Notes: Red raspberry, star anise, black plum skin, black cardamom, and cloves on the nose.  The texture of the wine on the palate is fresh, with bright acidity and gravelly minerality, leading to a juicy finish with complex flavors of pomegranate, black fig, tobacco, and bing cherry.
