Malat 2019 'Gottschelle' 1 ÖTW Grüner Veltliner, Kremstal, Austria

Winemaker: Michael Malat

Farming: Sustainable

Variety: Riesling

Terroir:  Malat’s vineyards are located on the right bank (south side) of the Danube.  Silberbichl (Silver hill) is named after the reflective shimmer of the flecks of mica weathered from its mica schist bedrock. This decomposed soil is a loamy mixed of loess deposits and layers of conglomerate river alluvium positioned on gradual terraces fully exposed to the summer sun from morning to night. Vines average over 30 years (2019).

Vinification: The grapes are hand picked and selected without botrytis. The press is gentle and the fermentation is made spontaneous with natural yeast in stainless steel vats. The first sulfite addition is done right after pressing. After fermentation the wine is racked into big old wood barrels.

Aging: 6-8 months in old 2000-liter barrels on fine lees. No fining. Filtered.

Tasting Notes: Dry and full bodied, this very balanced wine is is rich and aromatic. Bright notes of pineapple gummy candy, lime blossom, dried apricot and crushed stones and followed by a slightly woodsy and earthy component, creating a complex wine that can be paired against a variety of cuisines.

About the Classification: ÖTW ERSTE LAGE 1ÖTW (Premier Cru). These are vineyards whose wines have manifested themselves (and continue thus) as the most vigorous in character and the most distinctive representatives of their appellations. The natural conditions of each site consistently enables the vinification of exceptional wines every year.
