Birdhorse 2022 Rose, California, USA
Winemakers: Corinne Rich & Katie Rouse
Varieties: Valdiguié, Barbera, Carignan
Farming: Sustainable
Terroir: This rose does not hail from a single vineyard, but is instead a yearly exercise in the art of blending to best express the beauty of a vintage.
Vinification: In 2022, Valdiguié was once again the core of their rose blend. A small portion of Valdiguie grapes were put direct-to-press and pressed to a single stainless steel tank where it was allowed to begin fermentation. They also took small amounts of juice from of their Carignan and Barbera fermentations shortly after the grapes were put in the tank, and blended this juice in with the already fermenting Valdiguie juice. This process, known as saignée, is great for creating rose wines with a little more color and fruit power.
Once all pieces of juice were combined, the fermenting wine was transferred to stainless steel drums where it fermented dry and was sulfured to arrest secondary fermentation. The wine remained in drum for 5 months until it was racked for bottling.
Tasting notes: This wine has all the juicy sweet notes of a late spring day. Orange peel, peach melba, watermelon rind, all held aloft by a crisp mineral backbone. The palate comes into balance with a Campari-like bitterness to pair with fresh notes of orange blossom and watermelon and more watermelon.
