Farming: Sustainable with organic methods

Varieites: Carignano, Syrah

Sometimes you just want a meaty, brambly, juicy, warming red that’s more gulpable than it is punch-you-in-the-face with tannins. Enter Carignano, the magical Mediterannean iteration of Carignan, a beloved red grape that often takes a back seat to superstars like Grenache and Syrah in many blends. However, on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, off the western coast of Italy, Carignano is a superstar of its own. In the warm sunshine of the islands, Carignan has been cultivated for thousands of years, originally introduced by the ancient seafaring explorers The Phoenicians.

Located in northern Sardinia, Capichera is a family-run estate that bottled its first vintage in 1980 (although the family has been on the land for over 100 years). They farm without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, recognizing the need to protect the work of their ancestors. Today, their 50 hectares of land are planted only to Vermentino, Carignano and a touch of Syrah. Lianti means ‘east’ in the local language and is a reference to the morning sun-kissing east-facing vines that go into this cuvée.

No matter which way you’re facing when you drink this, we hope you love it as much as we do!

Food pairing is kind of easy for a wine like this: Grilled vegetables and hearty seafood (think swordfish), tomato sauce, and any kind of grilled meat. Or, challenge yourself to some quarantine cooking and find a recipe for the Sardinian classic Malloreddus alla Campidanese- a gnocchi-style pasta with sausage, tomatoes, and saffron!
