"Located in the northern central region of Italy, Emilia-Romagna is home to some of Italy’s most beloved exports: ravioli, Parmigiana Reggiano, Balsamic vinegar, Ferrari…. So it’s no surprise it also produces one of Italy’s most beloved and food-friendly wines: Lambrusco! 

In the mid 1800s, Cleto Chiarli was the proprietor of the Modena restaurant Osteria dell’Artigliere, and naturally wanting to provide a delicious accompaniment to his food, he made wine from the local Lambrusco grapes. In those days, locals made a methode ancestral style of wine, where the wine was allowed to ferment in bottle, trapping the CO2 expelled during fermentation and producing a cloudy, dry red wine that paired well with the salty and tangy flavors of Modena (still true today). However, Cleto had such success with his wines that he eventually established a proper winery, and by the end of the century, it became the largest privately-owned producer of Lambrusco.

Over the next century, the Chiarli family revolutionized the Lambrusco industry into one of Italy’s largest exports, and introduced the modern Charmat method of making sparkling wine to the region, a single fermentation under pressurized tanks, followed by cold stabilization to help clarify the wine. This redefined Lambrusco as a more elegant style of sparkling red wine, creating a more consistently sparkling wine that is clarified and filtered before bottling. Today, the winery is still in the hands of Cleto’s descendants, and it remains a privately-owned winery committed to high quality and sustainably produced sparkling wines.

Made from the Lambrusco di Sorbara grape, a native grape to Modena, the ‘Vecchia Modena’ bottling is an homage to Cleto’s original vision of Lambrusco wine. The bottle and label are reproductions of an 1892 bottle—the oldest existing bottle containing Lambrusco—that is still treasured in the Chiarli archives today. For many sommeliers, this bottle is a benchmark for what proper Lambrusco is. Medium bodied, intensely fruity, and with a touch of tannin, Lambrusco di Sorbara is meant to wash down Prosciutto di Parma, Ricotta-filled raviolis and salt-flecked aged parmigiana. There are very truly few bottles of wine in the world that are as destined for food as Lambrusco, so be sure to open this up with that cheese plate you’re snacking on by the TV, or the Neapolitan pizza you called in for dinner."
