Domaine Henri Gouges 2018 Clos de Porrets 1er Cru, Nuits-St-Georges, Burgundy
Located in the heart of the Cote d’Or in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Henri Gouges consists of 36 acres of vineyards. The 30 acres of Premier Cru vineyards has remained unchanged since the 1930s. Apart from a Bourgogne Rouge and Blanc and the Nuits-Saint-Georges Villages, there are seven Premiers Crus. The creation of Domaine Henri Gouges was the culmination of 400 years of family grape farmers, and it is, in many minds, the top domaine in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Henri formed the domaine in 1920 but was soon discouraged with selling the fruit to négociants. He envisioned a better quality wine, and by 1933 he was producing, bottling, and selling directly. While the house style has evolved, the main focus is the better reflection of the terroir in the fruit through organic & biodynamic viticulture. They believe that healthy vines produce quality fruit and thus more expressive terroir driven wines.
Winemaker: Gregory & Antoine Gouges
Farming: Biodynamic
Terroir / Soil: 9 acre monopole of the domaine. Pink Premeaux limestone, composed of calcareous scree and soil rich in clay.

Domaine Henri Gouges, Clos de Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France 2018 Burgundy is known for producing some of the world's most sought-after wines. Among the top producers is the Domaine Henri Gouges, located in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the heart of the Cote d’Or. With 36 acres of vineyards, the Domaine has remained in the Gouges family for over 400 years, and its 30 acres of Premier Cru vineyards have been unchanged since the 1930s.
Domaine Henri Gouges produces a range of wines, including Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of Bourgogne Rouge & Blanc, Nuits-Saint-Georges Villages, and seven Premiers Crus. However, the jewel in its crown is the 3.6-hectare Clos de Porrets, a Premier Cru vineyard owned entirely by the Domaine. Set on the pink limestone screes mixed with clay, the wines made here are long-keeping, structured Pinot Noir that expresses a lovely finesse after a few years of aging. Clos de Porrets is even mentioned by Dr. Lavalle in 1855, author of a well-known book on the wines of Burgundy, who considers it one of the best crus in all of Nuits-Saint-George.
Gregory and Antoine Gouges, the current winemakers, follow organic and biodynamic viticulture practices, believing that healthy vines produce quality fruit and thus more expressive terroir-driven wines. The vinification process is done with great care, starting with hand sorting and gravity feeding, followed by natural yeast fermentation. Tank fermentation at low temperatures takes over 10 days, then transferred into barrels, 20% of which is new, for elevage and malolactic fermentation. The wine is then racked into barrel for 18 months of maturation before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2018 vintage is a wine that demands patience, allowing its opulent and well-structured character to reach its full potential. This powerful and expressive Pinot Noir reveals its true complexity and depth after several years of aging, especially if you can hold it up to 20 years. It is an excellent choice for those creating a wine collection, as the primary tones of tree-ripe cherries and red plum and sweet leather will age into dried cranberries, mushrooms, dark earth covered in fall leaves. Additionally, it pairs exquisitely with a lavish meal of Coq au Vin or roasted lamb. — Cara PatriciaScores: 91 Points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate (09/30/2021)
