Domaine Joseph Roty 2016 Marsannay Rouge, Burgundy, France [375ml]

Domaine Joseph Roty has long been considered one of the top producers in all of Burgundy. The Grand Cru, Premier Cru and village level wines from Gevrey are always intensely concentrated, wonderfully complex and very long-lived. Joseph’s son Philippe now manages daily operations at the domaine and it is clear that the tradition of excellence will continue.

Eleven generations. All the way back to 1710. This is how deep and entangled the Roty family is with their vines and winemaking in the Côtes de Nuits. Generation number eleven is represented by the very capable Pierre-Jean Roty and his late brother, Philippe(ran the winery from 2003-2014). Both are very much like their late father, Joseph, in that they are extremely meticulous and strive to know every little thing there is to know about their parcels. How best to work them. Why they carry the names they do, etc. More noteworthy is their dedication to the philosophy that great wines come from great terroir. The Rotys have farmed organically for over 20 years but will not seek official certification any time soon.

Winemaker: Pierre-Jean Roty (since 2014, took over for late brother, Philippe)

Farming: Organic

Varieties: Pinot Noir

Terroir: 15 hectares in Marsannay and Gevrey-Chambertin, farmed since 1710. Clay and Limestone soils.

Vinification: 100% destemmed before entering cement tankVinifiedin steel tank prior to racking into 40% New Oak and 60% Neutral Oak (all French oak) barrels.

Aging: Aged in barrel for 18months then bottled and kept in the cellar for another 10 months

Scores: 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "Including many of the frosted lieux-dits that Roty normally bottle separately, the 2016 Marsannay unfurls in the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis, dark chocolate, grilled game and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and nicely concentrated, with excellent depth at the core and a long, penetrating finish. It's a decidedly superior Marsannay from Roty."

90 points Vinous - The 2016 Marsannay Village has quite an opulent, you might say, "ravishing" bouquet with intense cassis-infused red fruit, hints of Indian ink developing in the glass. The aromatic are not "shy". The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of freshness and substance. Gentle in grip with tangible backbone, this constitutes one of those Marsannay that is likely to be consumed far too early, when in fact, it will surely reach its apogee with three or four years in bottle.
