Flotsam & Jetsam 2017 "Stalwart" Cinsault, Western Cape, South Africa

Founded in 2011 by husband and wife team Chris & Suzaan Alheit, Alheit Vineyards is dedicated to pure, minimal-intervention wines from the Western Cape of South Africa. Alheit is based on Hemelrand, a beautiful mountain farm situated high on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in Walker Bay. This rugged piece of fynbos covered land belongs to Hans & Mary Anne Evenhuis, and is farmed organically and naturally by the Alheits.

The Alheit’s are absolute minimalists in their winemaking approach. Grapes are whole bunch pressed. No enzymes, sulphur or yeast are used. The grapes undergo natural fermentation, with absolutely no new oak used. The first sulphur is applied in winter. The wines are not racked and they stay on the lees for ten months. They do not fine and filtration is used only if absolutely needed.

Winemaker: Chris Alheit

Grape Varieties: 100% Cinsault

Farming: Sustainable and dry farmed

Terroir: Old vines, planted on granite & shale

Winemaking: Blend of 4 year old vines from vineyards in Swartland region; 100% whole cluster fermented with 2 weeks skin contact – hands off approach with native yeasts and no oak. Aged in cement tanks for 9 months with native yeasts before bottling.

Tasting Notes: A light to medium bodied wine, with smoky and sweet aromas of crushed strawberries and singed oregano. The palate is approachable and complex, with soft light tannins, notes of ripe red cherries and hints of graphite on the finish.
