Gros Ventre Cellars High Country White Chenin Blend, California 2021

Gros Ventre wines, sought after by Michelin-starred restaurants and discerning wine enthusiasts, are a testament to Chris Pittinger’s background as a sommelier and his unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines.

Chris and Sarah Pittinger's story began near the Gros Ventre River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where fate brought them together at a party. Chris, with a deep passion for wine, and Sarah, immersed in the advertising world, formed a lasting connection that transcended time and distance. Supported by Sarah's unwavering dedication, Chris honed his winemaking skills at renowned wineries in California and Australia, and in 2008, after their marriage, they founded Gros Ventre Cellars. The name carries a meaningful significance, referring not only to where they met but also the joyful anticipation of Sarah's pregnancy— Gros Ventre translates to “big belly” in French.

Chris collaborates closely with respected growers who share their dedication to sustainable viticulture. He selects cool climate sites with the perfect balance of sun, fog, wind, and soil, to ensure exceptional quality and ripeness. The winemaking process High Country White begins with a combination of 50% Clarksburg Chenin Blanc and a blend of Sonoma Viognier, Fiano, and Riesling. These grapes are carefully sourced from vineyards that epitomize the rugged and remote coastal terroir of the West Sonoma Coast, as well as the inland warmth of Clarksburg. Each varietal undergoes separate fermentation using native yeast, allowing their distinct characteristics to shine. The wines are then expertly blended, creating a symphony of flavors that harmonize seamlessly. Prior to bottling, the wine is left unfined and unfiltered, preserving its pure expression.
On the palate, expect a round and silky texture reminiscent of honeycomb, accompanied by fresh peach, lilac, and hints of orange rind. Its moderate body and refreshing acidity make it an ideal companion for flavorful dishes such as grilled shrimp, seared scallops, or creamy pasta. — Cara Patricia
