Jean Velut 2008 "Temoingage" Brut Millesieme, Champagne
Located in the satellite appellation of Montgueux, in the Aube, Jean Velut is a small family winery started in the 1970s. Montgueux is a massive outcropping of chalk, perfect for Chardonnay-based Champagne production, but until Jean started farming this area in the 70s, it was unknown. Jean moved his planting onto the steep slopes with more favoriable micro-climates over time, and now, three generation later, Champagne Jean Velut is a quiet rock star in the Aube, making wines that, simply put, are delicious.
Winemaker / Chef du cave: Benoit Velut
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay
Terroir: 40-50 year old vines grown in chalky clay, with veins of silex and red clay
Vinification: ‘Temoignage’ means “a tale” or “a testament,” and stands as a picture of the year’s conditions. The 2008 vintage was disgorded 9/2016. 4 g/l dosage with concentrated juice.
Tasting Notes: A blanc de blancs with layered complexity, notes of fresh baked bread, tart red and yellow apple skins, and fresh chalk powder come together with a searingly bright finish that echoes on the palate for minutes after its passed. Truly an amazing value for its depth, complexity and age.
