Lichen Estate 2017 "White Pinot", Pinot Noir Blanc, Anderson Valley, California, USA

Doug Lichen owns this estate in the Anderson Valley, planted exclusively to Pinot Noir and Pinot gris and farmed organically. This wine is kind of a unicorn, very few still ‘blanc de noirs’ are made without being turned into base wine for sparkling programs.

Winemaker: Doug Stewart

Farming: Organic

Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir, gently pressed off skins to make a white wine

Soil Type: Wolfey-Bearwallow complex: sandstone-derived, loam topsoil

Vinification/Oak Usage: Fermented primarily in stainless steel and aging for a year in used Hungarian oak puncheons.

Lichen's 2017 White Pinot Noir delivers a gorgeous floral nose followed by a mouthful of gravelly minerality and stone fruit. This unique wine, fermented mostly in stainless went on to age for a year in Hungarian oak puncheons, bringing a weight and texture all its own. Generous on the entry, it finishes mouthwatering and savory

In the year 2000, Doug Stewart bought this 203-acre farm in the heart of Anderson Valley. It had been a sheep ranch for 150 years. Oaks, bays, and madrones lined the four creeks and dotted the rolling hills of their watershed. Every winter the oaks lost their leaves but the green ghostly garb of lichen remained. Lichen is everywhere here, from the Yorkville Highlands to the Mendocino Coast. They named their farm "Lichen Estate" in honor of its beauty and grace. Seven acres of estate vines overlook Highway 128 from the 203-acre  Lichen Estate in Anderson Valley. Prepared in 2007 and planted in 2008  on meter-by- meter spacing, the vineyard comprises 75% Pinot Noir and  25% Pinot Gris vines on 15% to 35% southeast-facing slopes.
