Newfound 2018 ‘Benchland’ Carignane, Mendocino Co., CA, USA

Matt and Audra Naumann are wine industry veterans who were hungry to create a legacy for their family in the wine world. In 2016, they bought 40 acres of agricultural land in the Sierra Foothills, and promptly got to work on growing grapes and creating their own label, Newfound Wines. Their focus is on farming that honors the earth, producing wines that are distinct, but still rugged in presentation, enhancing the natural qualities of the varieties they work with.
  • Winemaker: Matt and Audra Naumann
  • Variety: Carignan
  • Farming: Sustainable
  • Terroir: Still in production,  the Carignane block, off  Road  I  in the Redwood  Valley, sits on a bench that contains a diverse mix of Pinole series soils –a well-drainedgravely mixture of clay with sedimentary materials.
  • Vinification: pon arriving at the winery, the fruit was tread by foot then placed entirely into one five ton fermenter. A five-minute pump over per day was all that was needed to gain the level of extraction they were seeking.  The fruit spent a total of 32 days on the skins and was then barreled down to a combination of Austrian and French demi-muids and one clay amphora.  The final wine was then bottled unfined and unfiltered in October 2020
The ‘Benchland’ Carignane comes from a plot within the Colombini Vineyard on the Mendocino Ridge, one of California’s highest elevation grape growing areas. This extremely rugged and isolated terrain is above the fog line, allowing for beautiful ripening. It has been consecutively farmed by the hands of the Colombini family since the 1970s.
After a 32 day fermentation with daily pump-overs, the Naumanns used a combination of Austrian and French demi-muids and one clay amphora to hold the wine, and finally bottle it unfined and unfiltered. The delicious final product is medium to full-bodied, with lots of brambly dark fruits-- mission fig, crushed blackberry and fresh plum. The weight of the fruit is juicy and warming on the palate, but the wine’s finish becomes minerally and earthy, finishing off with tarter black fruits and a pop of menthol, violets and dried thyme. Perfect for pairing with a roast chicken, or warmly spiced vegetable dishes.
