Nat Cool is not just about producing low-intervention wines – it embodies a movement uniting many different producers striving towards a shared goal of crafting uncomplicated, light and easy-to-drink wines.

Varieties: Jaen, Tinta Pinheira, Alfrocheiro, Baga and Touriga Nacional

Farming: Biodynamic

Terroir:  40 to 80 year old vines planted in granite soils.


Vinification: Hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel 


Tasting Notes: This wine is uncomplicated, versatile, elegant and refreshing, reflecting the terroir of the slopes of the Serra da Estrela. On the nose, fruits of the forest such as blackberry and currant combine with balsamic nuances typical of the Tinta Pinheira grape variety. On the palate, the Baga grape variety reveals its elegant and lively side as well as its lingering acidity which adds to the wine’s character.

Niepoort | Nat -Cool Drink Me  | Dão, Portugal | 2020

    Dirk Niepoort sits at the helm of one of Portugal’s most famous winemaking families. They have been in the Port business since 1842 and Niepoort remains one of the last three family-owned estates in the infamous city of Porto. But much of the family’s reinvigoration over the last thirty years can be credited to Dirk Niepoort, who is widely considered one of Portugal’s most visionary winemakers.

    From a young age, Dirk knew he wanted to make wines, not just broker and blend them. He made his first red wine under the Niepoort brand in 1987 from a blend of red grapes from the Douro. Since then, Dirk’s successfully pushed for biodynamic and organic farming practices in the vineyards of the Douro, Dão, and Bairrada regions, as well as contributing to the rise of natural winemaking in Portugal. His ‘Nat Cool’ lineup of wines is intended to showcase “cool and funky” wines made in collaboration with other Portuguese producers. These wines are meant to be innovative, light, and easy to drink, which is kind of perfect for the Thanksgiving holiday around the corner.

    This bright and crunchy red blend comprised of Jaen (known in Spain as Mencia), Tinta Pinheira, Alfrocheiro, Baga and Touriga Nacional. It’s smokey and juicy, with lots of ripe red cherry, baked strawberry, and sweet, earthy notes of chile de árbol and balsamic. The palate is light and a bit floral, making it an easy pairing for lean white meats or hearty veggies roasted with a lot of winter spices. The light tannins mean that this Nat Cool can even stand up to a little chill, so don’t be afraid to drink it juuuust a little cold!      — Simi Grewal
