Peay Vineyards 2016 "Les Titans" Estate Syrah, Sonoma Coast, CA [375ml]
Based in Annapolis in the West Sonoma Coast, Peay Vineyards focuses on terroir-driven, single-variety wines that underscore the beautiful expressions of the coastline's rugged terroir.
Winemaker: Vanessa Wong
Farming: Practicing organic
Varieties: Syrah (Clones: “Suitcase”; Cote Rotie; Clone 1; Estrella River “Chapoutier”; 470; 174)
Terroir / Soil: 4 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, with a strong cool climate influence. Uplifted ancient seabed, mingles with sandy loam and hints of clay.
Vinification: All clones from single vineyards are tasted blindly out of barrel to create the best possible blend from the vineyard that expresses its terroir. Any wine that does not make it into the single-site bottlings goes into this Sonoma Coast blend. 95% destemmed and
Aging: Aged on lees for 15 months in 10% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: One of California's best representations of Syrah, the cool climate of the coastline forces a prolonged growing season in order for the grapes to properly ripen. The resulting wine is brimming with purple and blue fruits, menthol, crushed dried herbs, leather and smoke. Structured and powerful, while still maintaining high acidity, this wine is delicious now, but can be cellared for enjoyment later as well. (Remember: small bottle formats age faster, so don't hold this wine as long as you would a 750ml bottle!)
