Winemaker: Vanessa Wong
Farming: Practicing organic
Varieties: Syrah (Clones: “Suitcase”; Cote Rotie; Clone 1; Estrella River “Chapoutier”; 470; 174)
Terroir / Soil: 4 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, with a strong cool climate influence. Uplifted ancient seabed, mingles with sandy loam and hints of clay.
Vinification: 95% destemmed. Natural fermentation. Les Titans is a blend of four of the six clones grown on eight steep, terraced acres each clone playing a key role in the blend’s profile.
Aging: Aged for 16 months in 10% new French oak barrels, 2 years in bottle. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: The nose features aromas of violets, juniper berry, bloody steak, and hints of white pepper around a red and blackberry fruit core. There is a dense stone and graphite middle core with some muscle and light tannins that will loosen with a few years of age. What sets our Syrah apart from the vast oceans of Syrah made in the world (of all styles) is the energy (read: acidity) in the wine. The red-fruited mid-palate and frontal floral lift makes this a wine of excitement and it is not heavy or plodding. Les Titans will drink well now though it needs a decant to open up the fruit and soften tannins.
