FROM OUR Q1 CELLAR BUILDER CLUB:

Henri Bourgeois Petit Bourgeois Sauvignon Blanc, Loire Valley, France 2021

Could you imagine working with your family? Could you imagine working with your family for eleven generations? It takes a special kind of patience and fortitude that the Bourgeois family has by the bushelful. Now on their eleventh generation, the Famille Bourgeois ecompasses 72 hectares of land in Sauvignon Blanc country, better known as the Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé regions of the Loire Valley. In the olden days, the family were subsistence farmers with a few goats and two hectares of vines, but over a half-century ago, Henri Bourgeois realized the family land had more potential. He began purchasing land on the slopes of Chavignol, and with his sons Jean-Marie and Rémi, they continued their pursuit of viticulture, parcel by parcel. Now, they have over 170 acres of pristine land where they make wine, run a hotel, and even have a famous restaurant which takes advantage of the natural bounty of the Loire Valley.

The Petit Bourgeois could be called Baby Sancerre for its huge aromatics and mineral tinge, with a light body and just the right amount of acidity. The Sauvignon Blanc undergoes a long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks, pulling out intense passionfruit notes. The wine matures for three months on its fine less which increases its creaminess, too. This wine doesn’t take itself too seriously; it’s more expensive single vineyard brothers take care of the seriousness. Instead, the Petit Bourgeois is a light-bodied, fun, easy-drinker to pop open with a movie and popcorn. Plus, its delicious! —Cara Patricia
