Pierre Gauthier 2019 'Jour de Soif', Bourgueil, Loire Valley, France
Since 1979, this master of Cabernet Franc has farmed 18 hectares in the village of Benais—the heart of the Bourgueil AOC. With the help of his wife, Catherine, until her untimely death in 2016, and their son, Rodolphe, who joined the domaine in 2005, Pierre does all of the vineyard work by hand and has been certified organic since 2000.
Winemakers: Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier
Farming: Certified Organic
Grapes: 100% Cabernet Franc
Terroir: Clay and silica
Vinification: 100% destemmed grapes. Native yeasts for long cuvaisons of up to 3 weeks.
Tasting Notes: The Gauthiers make a fresher, early drinking wine every year that is meant to be drunk during the first year of release. Always delicious, it has all of the wonderful things we look for in young Cabernet Franc; dark fruit, soft tannins, refreshing finish, good mineral component. This is great quaffing wine.
