Ramey 2015 Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, CA, USA

A benchmark for California Chardonnay, always made with care for balance. David Ramey has made a name for himself as one of California's great winemakers. He spent the late 80s and early 90s making wine at places such as Chalk Hill, Matanzas Creek and Rudd Oakvile, transforming these establishments into internationally recognized wineries. It was when he was working for Christian Moueix (Chateau Petrus) at Dominus Estate that he took a stab at making his own Chardonnay, and from that, Carla and David Ramey established Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996.

Winemaker: David Ramey

Grapes: Chardonnay

Terroir: Sonoma Coast AVA from 3 different sites: 61% Martinelli Charles Ranch Vineyard and 39% Platt Vineyard (their coolest site).

Vinification: Whole cluster press for delicacy. Native-yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage. After aging 12 months in 17% new French oak barrels (François Frères and Taransaud Burgundy), the Chardonnay was traditionally fined for clarity and texture during the following harvest, and bottled without filtration in January, 2017.

ABV: 14.5%

Tasting Notes: An exquisitely balanced Chardonnay; aromas of lemon curd, smashed nectarine, ginger and salted green apples come together on the palate under a veil of toasted almond that lingers on the palate. The acidity is mouthwatering, and frames a long finish of toasty tropical notes.
