Tegernseerhof 2019 'Durnstein' Riesling Federspiel, Wachau, Austria

The historical roots of Tegernseerhof go back over 1000 years. Holy Roman Emperor Henry II granted the Benedictine monastery of Tegernsee two oxgangs of land in Wachau. In 1176, Tegernseerhof was built and named after its owner. Today, Tegernseerhof is owned by the Mittelbach family. The winery has been in its possession for five generations. The name has been preserved, like the ancient knowledge of viniculture, passed on from one generation to the next.

Winemaker: Martin Mittelbach

Farming: Sustainable

Variety: Riesling

Terroir: The Tegernseerhof vineyards are located on the best slopes of the Wachau region. They are characterized by steep terraces of primary rock, with optimal exposure to sun and wind. Grown on a patchwork of different soils between the Danube and the Riesling terraces, Dürnstein's (formerly Frauenweingarten) alluvial river sands.

Soil: löss (also spelled loess, or löess) dominated soils mixed with river sand and alluvium

Vinification: The grapes are harvested and sorted rigorously to take out any botrytis grapes and then vinified and raised in stainless steel. They are harvested with no botrytis to keep the wines focused and tense. The estate is a member of the Vinea Wachau, therefore the vinification follows the strict regulations of the “Codex Wachau”.

Tasting Notes: Minerally and persistent, this laser sharp riesling brings aromas of white peach, wet stone, fresh ginger and night blooming jasmine.
