Tyler 2018 Dierberg Vineyard - Block 5 Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley, CA, USA [375ml Half Bottle]

Founded by Justin Willet, Tyler Winery focuses on creating complex, nuanced wines from Santa Barbara, the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley in the Central Coast. The cool climate, mix of elevations and geologically diverse soils here lend incredible terroirs for Justin and his team to work with.

Winemaker: Justin Willet

Variety: Pinot Noir

Terroir: Block 5 in Dierberg vineyard tends to have a more reddish color and more clay on top of gravel, helping to provide a touch more structure and depth to the finished project. The vines were planted in the mid-90s in the Santa Maria Valley.

Vinification: The grapes are harvested before they are destemmed into open-top fermenters. Native yeast fermentation starts after about five days before the juice is gently extracted by using punch down and pump-overs. The wine is pressed and then settled before going into oak barrels, a third of which is new.

Aging:The wine is aged on its lees between 12 to 14 months, before being racked and blended, then transferred back into barrel for another 3-4 months.

Tasting Notes:Aromatically the wine is finessed with notes of tart cranberries and pomegranates, with a hint of oranges. On the palate, the wine is balanced between savory and red fruit notes, with a bright acidic structure and juicy finish.

Scores: 96pts, Vinous - The 2018 Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard Block 5 is a total knockout. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and sage give the 2018 so many shades of nuance. A dark, somber expression of Pinot comes through loud and clear. Wild, deep, exotic, the 2018 is truly spectacular. All it needs is more time in bottle. - August, 2020, Antonio Galloni
