Winzerin Birgit Wiederstein 2018 Blaufrankisch, Carnuntum, Austria

Wild woman wine. I think that can aptly describe the creations of Birgit Wiederstein. Birgit’s vines (and 280 year-old cellar) are in Göttlesbrunn, the center of the undervalued Carnuntum wine region of Austria. Birgit believes in natural beauty. For these reasons, she works completely biodynamically, allowing the vineyard and the vines to show their best side without any makeup.  .   -Cara P.

Farming: Biodynamic

Winemaker: Birgit Wiederstien

Varieties: Blaufrankisch

Soil / Terroir: Clay limestone

Vinification: Birgit creates this wine as if she's gone back in time 100 years. She hand harvests the grapes and foot stomps them before they undergo spontaneous fermentation. Aged in a large wooden barrel for 2 to 4 years, bottled unfiltered and left to mature in bottle in her cool cellars. The paper label was created by Birgit's uncle, in letterpress, is glued by hand, and the bottle is then sealed and wrapped by hand.

Tasting Notes: A structured, balanced and gracious red wine. Medium bodied, aromas of freshly picked blackberries, crushed red plums, wet river rock and hints of mocha and red florals on the finish.

Less than 600 bottles produced.

Birgit Wiederstein is somewhat of a needle in a haystack when it comes to Austrian producers. She is fiercely tied to the natural beauty of her vineyards and strives to be as minimalist as possible in her vinification approach to best showcase the purity of her grapes. She embraces this through total and exclusive hands-on winemaking. No machines, no herbicides or pesticides, biodynamic farming and only neutral barrels for vinification and aging. Birgit’s vines (and 280 year-old cellar) are in Göttlesbrunn, the center of the undervalued Carnuntum wine region of Austria, just west of Vienna.

Her 100% Blaufrankisch bottling comes from her best vineyard holdings, and it is oh so close to her heart. Birgit creates this wine as if she's gone back in time 100 years; she hand harvests the grapes and foot stomps them herself before they undergo spontaneous indigenous yeast fermentation. Aged in a large wooden barrel for 2 to 4 years, bottled unfiltered and left to mature in bottle in her cool cellars, this wine develops nuance and complexity, meant to showcase the range of Blaufrankisch when treated with care. This treatment isn’t just limited to the wine; the paper label created by Birgit's uncle, in letterpress, is glued by hand, individually numbered and the bottle is then sealed and wrapped by hand! Medium-bodied, with notes of black licorice, red currant, menthol and gravelly minerality, this wine can drink well now, or lie down for 5-7 years

Try this with smoked sausage off the grill, red potato goulash, tomato or vinegar-based sauces, and cheesy spaetzle dumplings!
