Lacuna Syrah, Sonoma Co., California 2019
From winemaker Aaron Dornstreich and his wife Rachel, the Lacuna Wines project began with two of Aaron’s dear industry friends, one a Burgundy importer and the other a fellow wholesaler. Now overseen by Aaron and Rachel, their wines are lovingly sourced from various locations around Sonoma County. This 2019 Syrah was sourced from the Griffin’s Lair Vineyard, Walker Vine Hill, and Hudson Vineyard.
This gorgeous wine begins its life under lutte raisonnée, or sustainable & minimal, farming. This vintage was fortunate enough to escape Sonoma’s Kincade fires of 2020 (which sadly prevented the winery from producing bottles in 2020). The summer of 2019 was warm but cooled nicely in early to mid-October, giving the fruit great freshness at harvest. Excellent stem maturation gave way to Lacuna’s preferred method of 50% whole cluster inclusion/fermentation, followed by 13 months of aging in 22% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is a "well-fruited" wine framed by particularly sweet, fine tannins and wonderfully elevated aromatics of pink peppercorns, kombu umami, and violets. It is worth noting that Lacuna is made mostly of Syrah (96%), co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier (4%). This technique is traditionally used in Cote-Rotie to give a bit of aromatic lift to burley Syrah. The result is a bold, savory experience that is still agile and fresh. Lacuna has deep and complex notes of juicy black plum, black pepper, smoked meat, and woody herbs. The fine, lignified tannins and texturally balanced mouthfeel keep you firmly rooted in the present. This wine will keep you coming back for more. Pair this elegant Syrah with braised lamb shanks, roasted eggplant, and potatoes dauphinoise, or go crazy and enjoy it with Korean BBQ. —Karen Smith, Cellar Builder Club Notes, April 2024
