Stater-West Saumur Rouge, Loire Valley, France 2021

Brendan Stater-West has been quietly but quickly generating a profile as one of the Loire Valley's hottest new producers. A young American guy from Oregon with no winemaking history ends up in Saumur as the assistant vigneron to Romain Guiberteau--that's a story in itself. But Brendan's natural talent is clearly apparent once you take a sip of his wines. He launched his domaine in 2015, and has been improving his wines with each vintage!

  • Variety: Cabernet Franc
  • Terroir: The Saumur Rouge comes from a young south-west vineyard of Cabernet Franc in Brézé, in the lieu-dit La Ripaille. The soil profile is predominately sandy-clay of 1.5m in depth. Brendan is just the second grower with La Ripaille. (The other is Antoine Foucault of Domaine du Collier.)
  • Farming: Lutte raisonnée, organic methods
  • Vinification: Harvest is sorted in the vineyard then destemmed 100% upon arrival at Brendan’s facility. Maceration is based on an infusion style, no extraction (no pump-overs, pigeage, delestage) and lasts 6 days in order to preserve delicate and purity in texture. Aging is also in stainless steel for 6 months.
  • Tasting Notes: A true expression of Loire Cabernet Franc at its best, this wine easily lines up against some of the most lauded iterations of Saumur (think Lambert, Guiberteau, Collier). Velvety and distinctive, aromas of red licorice, black plums, crushed rocks and sweet violets pop from the glass, producing a silky and very drinkable wine.
