ORGANIC FARMING

ETNA and SICILY

Giuseppe Russo is a quiet thoughtful young man, formerly a pianist. Since 2005 he has been organically farming his family's old vineyards,  many of the vines around 100 years of age, and he is restoring the old cellar under his house. He has 15 hectares of vines on the Northside of  Etna around the town of Passopisciaro and sells off the fruit from the youngest vines to other producers. He is currently producing his 2000 case production from only 7  hectares of old vines.

  • Winemaker: Giuseppe Russo
  • Farming: Organic
  • Varieties: Nerello Mascalese
  • Terroir: Mount Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano and home to some of the world's most interesting vineyards. Vines here are planted Albarello (little trees), they are not trellis-trained. The grapes for this rose come from all of Giuseppe's parcels, mostly lower elevation fruit (from the north side of Mt. Etna) that is earlier ripening. The vineyards are planted on ancient lava flows, all varying in age and mineral content as well as topsoil composition with underground pockets that allow water retention to keep the vines hydrated during the heat of the summer.
  • Vinification: Grapes are picked and pressed, and only free-run juice is captured; the only skin contact is in the press. Vinification and aging occur in stainless steel.
  • Tasting Notes: This medium-plus bodied,  refreshing rosato brims with lively aromas of blood orange, fresh strawberry and tarragon. The palate is crisp and minerally, with hints of flint and sea salt to back up the aromas of fresh citrus notes. Pairs amazingly with seafood and warm days!
