  • Winemaker: Enno Lippold
  • Varieties: Riesling
  • Farming: Sustainable with Organic Practices
  • Terroir: Red Slate Soils, 65+ year old vines, from a single parcel in the Neuberg section of Ürziger Würzgarten (Lippold's coolest site).
  • Vinification: Traditional method
  • Tasting Notes: This wine shows delicate notes of citrus & minerals in both the nose and mouth. The texture is impressive in that it is rich with some nutty nuances, but then settles into a light-handed but very persistent wine with a dry, crisp, mineral finish.

From our January 2024 Club notes:

Dr. Lippold 'Sparkling Moselle' Riesling Brut, Mosel, Germany 2016

January always calls for bubbles. It would be more common to find a “Sparkling Moselle”, as this wine is called, on the wine lists of the Titanic than in wine shops now— it harkens back to a time when German sparkling wines were given the same reverence as Champagne (many of the most famous Champagne houses were established by Germans, afterall). Dr. Enno Lippold is a man who is dedicated to embracing the past, all from his vineyards in the steep slopes of Neuberg in the heart of Ürziger Würzgarten, the spice garden of the Mosel.

During the reign of Napoleon, Neuberg was a Premier Cru vineyard, creating Rieslings that were both densely texture, yet super lightweight. This cooler parcel is ideal for light, bright sparkling wines that are nuanced, mineral, and delicious. Enno farms everything nearly organically, and hand-makes this tasty bubbly to enjoy year round. The grapes are fermented and aged only in stainless steel, to preserve the purity and richness of the prized Riesling fruit. This wine is truly satisfying, with acidity and lift, and a concentrated punch that makes it shine best alongside rich foods. Try it with a lunch of Crab rolls and an oyster tower!  — Cara Patricia
