WOMAN-MADE and NATURAL WINE
GISBORNE and NORTH ISLAND
NEW ZEALAND

In 1984 James and Annie Millton established Millton Vineyards on the banks of the Te Arai River, on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand in the wine appellation of Gisborne. It is here in 1871 that early settlers first planted grapevines. Millton is New Zealand’s first organic and second biodynamic wine estate, certified by Bio-Gro and Demeter respectively, and has been cultivated this way since the winery’s founding.

'La Cote’ is home to a collection of modern Pinot Noir clones and like all the Millton vineyards are dry-farmed and have been cultivated biodynamically since 1989. As tractors cannot traverse this site, all work is done by hand.

  • Winemaker: Annie Millton
  • Varieties: Pinot Noir
  • Farming: Biodynamic
  • Terroir / Soil: Soils are dense clay over sandstone giving smallish bunches with moderate vigor.
  • Vinification: The grapes are harvested by hand, chilled, sorted, and destemmed uncrushed into small wooden cuves for prolonged fermentation using natural yeasts. Pressing takes place after one lunar phase – 28 days where the wine rests for a time until being put into a barrel.
  • Aging: Bottled July 26th, 2022 with no fining or filtration.
  • Tasting Notes: A bright fruited, expressive nose, with notes of dark cherry, juniper berry and an intriguing hint of fennel and manuka flower. There is a savory taste with firm tannins and ripe fruit finishing with a lively mineral edge to balance.
  • Alcohol: 13%
